"Cathedral vs the Bazaar"

"The Cathedral and the Bazaar" is an essay written by Eric S. Raymond in 1997 and also a part of a book of the same name published in 1999.

This essay is contrasting two different software, one is the Cathedral and developed by a few people and the Bazaar that is an open source developed in the Internet in front of the public.

According to Raymond when we have a software that anybody can play with and test with, in most cases these people can find errors and by screwing the software and fixing it later these errors are more likely to be discovered and get fixed in no time. It's like we have a huge amount of people working as a team in a project, we will definitely have this project done with no errors very fast.
On the other hand we have the Cathedral which is a software that only a few people can mess with, so for these people to find the errors and to fix it it'll take "an inordinate amount of time and energy".

What is the Kernel?

The kernel is the center of a big operating system, the Linux kernel is like the heart of this huge system. "GNU/Linux" is the name if this operating system while the best way to call only the kernel is "Linux". The GNU/Linux is divided by two levels, user's space and kernel space. Inside the user's space is the GNU C Library and provides the bridge between the upper level which is the user space and the lower level, the kernel. The kernel can be divided by three different layers. The first one is the System Call Interface, the middle one is the kernel code, and the bottom is the Architecture-independent kernel code. The Linux operating system has become very stable and provides great memory use and CPU usage.

"7 things you don't need to know about me"

1. Hi, my name is Fabiola and one of the things you don't have to know about me is that I am from Bolivia, Southamerica. I moved to the US 6 years ago, and I learned to speak English in only a year.
2. I started school here at TMCC a year ago. I graduated from high school 8 years ago back in Bolivia, went to a university down there for two years and then I moved here.
3. I took this class last semester and I had to drop it at the beginning because I was taking 2 more classes and I am also working full time, so I felt it was too overwhelming.
4. I work with the Social Services Department, helping people that really needs it. I love my job because right now with this bad economy, people are losing their jobs and we are at least trying to help them.
5. The most important thing for me is my family. I learned to appreciate them when I moved here.
6. I love to go shopping with my friends.
7. I like to go dancing more than going to the movies. My favorites type of music are salsa, merengue, cumbia and hip hop.

I hope we have fun this semester! =)
